His fondest wish is for real friends, but he’s always been different from the other children with his love of spinning in circles and making silly sounds. Being brilliant with math accidentally leads him to discover a love of music.

Music therapy protocols help Trevor with his attention focus and overall coordination. His daily Skally walk helps him immensely and then the idea for the walk is shared with Grandfather Hakeem, who finds his Parkinson's disease gait difficulties much improved.

Fun with the Band

Learning about music and making music with others provides wonderful enrichment. Music enrichment differs from music therapy.

Keyboardists Trevor and Tasha, along with bass player Bijan, drummer Ryan, and vocalist Becky make up the band. They write or re-write songs to help with memory (for science tests, for example) or with movement (the Skally walk), as well as have a ball with music.

The character of Bijan in the book is based on the memory of the remarkable Bijan Dhanani. An avid musician, entrepreneur, and amazing individual, he was a piano student of the author in grade school and grew up to be a wonderful friend.

The song We Will Rock You, written by the great band Queen, was the inspiration for Rhythm Rocks You. So much incredible music from this band, particularly Bohemian Rhapsody, paved the way for new ways to respond to music.

The kids in Trevor's band wrote their graduation song My Diploma with a rewrite of the lyrics from My Sharona, one of the most popular pieces performed by the band The Knack. It's another great example of how rhythm inspires movement.
